Developing the OnniBus app for more convenient trip booking
OnniBus provides bus services in Finland. Nomtek worked with the company on a full-cycle product development to create a mobile booking application that helps users travel smarter.
OnniBus is a Finnish inter-city coach operator founded in 2011, operating on 10 routes across the country. The company provides daily bus services with flexible pricing, special prices, and discounts.
When OnniBus started, the company was selling its bus tickets via a desktop website. Being a disruptive coach operator among the traditional inter-city bus services, OnniBus wanted to move beyond the website and make it even easier for customers to get a bus ticket.
Mobile applications are an effective way to drive additional traffic and generate more revenue from offered services. With an intuitive route-finding feature and customizable ticket preferences, OnniBus could streamline ticket buying for its customers.
OnniBus approached us with a clear idea for the product — a mobile booking app for bus services. Our team brainstormed on the designs and functionalities, shaping the app so that it would meet the market need confirmed by OnniBus during idea validation.
Scope of Work
The client had only an idea for the app. Together, we ideated further, creating designs and feature suggestions. We then developed OnniBus for mobile in native technologies.
Design
Our designers crafted the user flow so that ticket booking is intuitive and fast. The design is simple and clean.
Frontend Development
Using native languages — Kotlin and Swift — OnniBus is quick with a platform-familiar feel and look. The application had fast screen transition speeds.
Backend Development
Focusing on speed and performance, we built the backend in Ruby on Rails, which helped give the application the necessary fast response times for people on the go.

Solution
A convenient mobile booking app with seat allocation and a secure payment option would help OnniBus fortify its position as a transportation disruptor.
The app features:
- Convenient Seat Selection — Users can book a seat depending on their preferences and the availability of additional amenities.
- Simple Booking — A quick and easy way to view travel options and purchase tickets.
- In-App Tickets — After purchase, users can show their boarding pass in the app. Ticket confirmation doesn't require an internet connection.
Mobile applications are an effective way to drive additional traffic and generate more revenue from offered services. With an intuitive route-finding feature and customizable ticket preferences, OnniBus streamlined ticket buying for its customers.
After release, we provided six-month maintenance, fixing bugs and supporting the infrastructure to withhold the surge in demand for the company’s services.
